Keyfacts

Your prospects with a degree in Psychology

Human behavior and thinking, both in our personal everyday lives as well as in our interactions with others, is complex. After successfully completing your psychology study program, you will be able to understand this complexity. This will open up many different job opportunities in various sectors.

If you want to work as a health psychologist, clinical psychologist, or psychotherapist, you will generally have to complete a consecutive master’s study program after successfully completing your bachelor’s degree – regardless of whether you want to pursue a career in Austria or Germany.

The following applies to Germany:

The Psychology (B.Sc.) study program teaches content that is a mandatory part of a bachelor’s study program for licensing as a psychotherapist in accordance with the German PsychThG (2019) in conjunction with PsychThApprO (2020) and thus conforms to licensing requirements.

The following applies to Austria:

The Psychology (B.Sc.) study program teaches content that is a mandatory part of a bachelor’s study program for postgraduate training in health psychology and clinical psychology in accordance with the requirements of the Austrian Psychologengesetz 2013, §7 (Psychologists Act).

According to the Psychotherapiegesetz (1990) (Psychotherapy Act), psychotherapy training in Austria is exclusively the responsibility of recognized psychotherapeutic training institutions. A successful bachelor’s degree in Psychology (B.Sc.) in combination with a relevant master’s degree in Psychology (M.Sc.) is one of several prerequisites for meeting the entry requirements for a postgraduate psychotherapy training.

But even without a subsequent master’s degree, there are numerous career opportunities for you:

  • Consulting in traffic development
  • Marketing
  • Consulting in sustainable transformation processes
  • Consulting in change management processes
  • Public relations
  • Human resources management
  • Education

With a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (B.Sc.), you can start a master’s degree, which is the prerequisite for working as a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist. Of course, you can also go on to study another master’s program, such as Business Psychology (M.Sc.).

Your Psychology study program in detail

In the Psychology bachelor’s program, you will learn the basics of clinical psychology and psychotherapy. You will continue your education in the field of diagnostics and methodology. You will also gain insights into other fields of application such as environmental psychology and business psychology. The study program lays the foundation for a subsequent consecutive master’s degree.

At the beginning of your studies, you will learn the basics and history of psychology and continue your education in statistics and scientific work. As the bachelor’s program in Psychology (B.Sc.) is in line with licensing requirements, you will learn how to apply psychotherapeutic and psychological procedures and methods. During your studies, you will focus on acquiring the skills to independently care for patients.

You can also design your studies according to your personal preferences by choosing electives that match your interests and professional goals.

This study program is currently being accredited for a planned start in the spring semester of 2024. Changes to the content are subject to accreditation by AQ Austria.

In the sixth semester of your studies, you can choose one out of two compulsory electives:

  • Cognitive-Affective Neuroscience and Clinical Neuropsychology
  • Health Psychology

Are you interested in neuropsychological processes of the brain? Would you like to study personality or behavioral changes? Or do you find it more exciting to get to know and study psychological concepts in the healthcare system? Whatever your interests are: During your studies, you can focus on the subjects you like most.

If you would like to study psychology, you will complete subject sessions during your studies. During the subject sessions, you act as a study participant for your fellow students – and in turn, they act as a study participant for you. You must complete a total of 30 trial subject sessions over the course of your bachelor’s program. This will give you a first insight into the practical work of psychology and psychotherapy.

In addition, a compulsory internship is included in the bachelor’s study program. In the internship – which you can also complete abroad – you will dive into everyday work life in a psychological field of your choice. In the research-oriented internship, you will learn the basics of research in practice, while the career-qualifying internship will help you to pursue your own interests and discover various professional fields of psychology.
