Research plays a central role at Charlotte Fresenius Privatuniversität, as does the transfer of research findings to society and the economy.

With our transformation research, we want to actively advance the necessary change towards a more sustainable way of thinking and acting.

Our goal is not only to research new ways of thinking, but also to teach them. As a University of Sustainability, we focus on the issues of sustainable management. This focus is also closely linked to teaching: our professors are experts in their fields and involve students in their research projects.

Research question

We pursue a transdisciplinary research approach in which the two fields of business administration and business psychology come together. In particular, we address the following questions:

What are the barriers to sustainability in business and society, and how can they be overcome?

The necessary measures and other sustainable developments to combat climate change have not yet been implemented, even though the necessary scientific findings have been available for a long time. Why is that?

Research focus

For the past 50 years, sustainability has been discussed in many different dimensions (e.g., resource and energy efficiency, climate protection, and biodiversity). However, as we can see today, all the measures taken so far are inadequate. The central question is: What are the barriers that prevent us from implementing the necessary innovations in the economy and society to achieve greater sustainability?

At Charlotte Fresenius Privatuniversität, we therefore focus on these four research topics:

  • Research of sustainability barriers
  • Psychology of sustainability
  • Application-oriented environmental ethics
  • Key success factors for sustainable transformation

Research approach

Real-world laboratories have evolved into a research approach at the interface of science, business and society. Their aim is to generate knowledge for more sustainability in business and society.

Conducting research using real-world laboratories means carrying out interventions in a social context in order to learn more about certain social dynamics. In this way, social and political processes can be observed and analyzed.

The real-world laboratory research is thus closely linked to the concepts of field and action research.

Sustainable Innovation Lab (SIL)

The Sustainable Innovation Lab is a starting point for students to apply and practice the skills they have learned during their studies. The SIL also provides support in the development of ideas and start-ups, the preparation of business plans and the realization of prototypes. Thanks to the many different contacts of the employees, students also get support in networking, particularly when it comes to start-ups. Practical workshops and events on the topics of sustainability, start-ups, and financing help students at Charlotte Fresenius Privatuniversität to develop personally and take the first step into their future.

The SIL is responsible for providing the research and consulting infrastructure for impact-oriented transfer projects in accompanying sustainability transformation research. Knowledge and skills acquired during the study program(s) Business Administration (and Business Psychology) are further trained in the Sustainable Innovation Lab (SIL).

These are the main objectives of the SIL:

  • Development of ideas and start-ups
  • Project management
  • Network management
  • Creation of start-up ecosystems in Austria
  • Creation and implementation of business plans
  • Creation of prototypes

According to its research concept, Charlotte Fresenius Privatuniversität uses the research approach of real-world laboratories, which has proven to be a successful research approach at the interface of science, business, and society, especially in the context of sustainable development.

The SIL aims to be a practice-oriented contact point where people, especially founders, can share their ideas. Workshops full of inspiration, accompanying coaching sessions, and exciting events are designed to bring the topic of sustainable development into the world of business start-ups so that SIL participants can make a profit with their green ideas.
